Week 63: Land of the Chosen Frozen

Dear Family and Friends,

Welcome to Fairbanks, where the weather can't make up its mind. First off, it's SNOWED, then gotten sunny for a little, then SNOWED AGAIN... you get the picture. It's cold, just not Fairbanks cold, and the snow is finally melting. On another note, I feel like I am running against a clock all the time, but it keeps beating me.

So, Monday Sister Washington went to the emergency room and they sent her home without any real diagnosis, and right away, President Beesley made the decision that she needed to head back home to Utah for medical care. So while she had strength, she shipped out on Monday night to Anchorage, then Tuesday to Salt Lake. Short story: I was with the 2nd ward/ Asian Sisters- Sister Gerber and Sister Petersen from Monday until Friday, not knowing how long that would go, and President surprised us with an early transfer call saying my new companion, Sister Poudrier, would come up on Friday afternoon. So she is here now, transfers are tomorrow, but I am staying in Fairbanks.
A member of the branch said that Sister Washington said they found an ulcer; it may take her a couple of months to recover before she can make it back.

Long Story of the week:

The Sisters have been great; it's been pretty rough, with changes, and trying to keep up both areas and taking care of what needs to get done. They have been a laugh for me, but also just there to listen too. We worked both their and my area for most of the week and coordinated appointments and I slept on couch cushions and got to help Sister Gerber with some of her cooking (she's had to cut more out of her diet since I was last companions with her), and got to know Sister Petersen a little better- she is hilarious, she is so random! It was perfect for each of us to be in this trio for a bit and we all got along very well. I miss them already and they are still around! haha. By the way! Salt Lake has a new title for leaders who are Sisters-- they are Sister Training Leaders-- Sis. Gerber and Petersen are that this transfer, but they are both heading home in 6 weeks- they were way excited about that- a basic overview without taking too much time to explain that is they are kind of like zone leaders over a certain set amount of sisters, so we have two sets of them in the mission.  The others are Sister Burbank and Sister Ashbrook in Anchorage. They will go on exchanges with each set of sisters they are over in the mission. OH and they opened Sitka to Sisters finally! I have been begging to go there. Who knows.

So, we met a couple of potentials at dinner this week and OYM-ed a LOT of people, but the two who walked up to us and wanted to learn more.  So excited to see how those lessons go!

So, since Sister P. came into Fairbanks, things have been BUSY. We have had a couple new investigators and have a few more lined up- this branch really comes alive in the summer, but it was already awesome to begin with anyway! We had a lesson with one of our new investigators who accepted the invitation to be baptized if he finds out it is true. We had invited him to one of the other sets of Elders' Baptisms but he did not make it on time, so that didn't work out, but we have been making tons of phone calls and setting up a lot of appointments, so it should be a pretty busy week ahead!

We had the opportunity to teach the young women out in North Pole in their mutual activity and we role played and they were nervous to talk about the Gospel at first, but we demonstrated it, and had the Elders there to help, and then invited them to write their testimony in a Book of Mormon and to pray about someone to give it to- they were excited.

Our investigator came back from the slope and had his Baptismal interview yesterday (and just a reminder, this slope has really nothing to do with skiing as far as I am aware.) We are SO EXCITED!

On a funny note, yesterday, Sister Poudrier and I were driving down Chena Hot Springs Road to a fireside and saw an older guy on a three wheeler doing a wheelie. That was AWESOME!

Love,

Sister Wuehler

Week 62: Details

Dear Family and Friends,

So it has been relatively hot here- 30s to 40s-- but puddles here are HUGE! Breakup is here and I am finally seeing some grass- the first green grass I have seen so far is in the center divide of the streets- YES!

So, I will make a long story short-- Sister Washington is in the E.R. right now (AGAIN).  We went back in Saturday night to the E.R. because some of the symptoms they were saying she needed to come back in for were coming up- hasn't kept food down since and is feeling the same sharp pains in her side as when they found the Gall stones- maybe they missed one? Don't know yet but they will do a lot of tests today and she is holding up.

As for me, I am on a 24 hour exchange right now and I am with Sister Petersen and Sister Gerber is with Sister Washington- it's been a stressful week.

(Our investigator) is getting baptized on May 4th and will also be back from the slope this week. It'll be good to actually see him in person! He is so excited to be baptized and it's a special spirit to be able to be a part of this time in his life, the choices he is making and I can feel that confirmation over again that this is right, and that he knows it.

I went on Saturday afternoon to do service, and I have seen that although Sister Washington AND I are just dying to get out there and work, we haven't been able to, but there are different ways the work is still moving forward. This illness has not stopped it from moving forward-- at service, I met a member who just got back from school who worked a lot with the missionaries last summer and is a fellow shipper for a lot of our former investigators. We helped remove snow from her house so there isn't a flood in the basement, but I know I was there to make that contact, even though the question of doing an exchange for that was so I could also get out of the house. We are continuing to do exchanges for appointments as well, but even in our own being impatient, I have seen great blessings. That recent convert who hadn't been coming is now coming to church even with work, and we are sending him scriptures each night to read on his lunch breaks during the night.

A member of our ward told us about what is happening in Boston.a After hearing about it, and (finding out) that I had family running in that race (who had just finished the race and were headed 2 blocks down to receive awards), I was shocked. But I was interested to hear a letter she read us from a missionary who got permission to write that day, telling his family he was doing fine, but he and many other missionaries, the way their day had been planned, had made plans to be there at the finish line just round the time the attacks came, but those plans didn't work out and none of those missionaries were at that finish line that day. The Lord is in the details.

Alma 20:23 Lamoni's Father was only willing to give up to 1/2 of his kingdom for his life, but in continuing reading, it says in Alma 22:18 that he would give away all of his sins to know God.  I can see that change of heart in Lamoni and I can see it all around. To reconcile is defined as to become friendly with, and to do that- we have to have a softened heart, or a willing heart-- Only turning to the Savior can do that. That's why he wants us to see things through his eyes, because he can see so clearly, when most of our vision is just clouded by our own, or others misunderstandings. He wants us to look past that- someone shared about how when we look out a window in the dark, all we can see is ourselves and our reflection, it takes a little more effort to look into what we thought we couldn't see and to see outside and to look beyond ourselves.

There were two sisters from the branch who gave their farewell talks yesterday, I am going to miss them so much!! One going to Japan, one going to Scotland/ Ireland-- It's interesting being on this side of watching them go and also remember the influence the sisters had on me before my mission. Sometimes I think of them daily as I go out and work and make decisions out there- they taught me more than they will really know.

Anything good in this life is worth waiting and working for.

Love,

Sister Wuehler

Alma 26:36 (I think I'm one of those wanderers in a strange land)
36 Now if this is aboasting, even so will I boast; for this is my life and my light, my joy and my salvation, and my redemption from everlasting wo. Yea, blessed is the name of my God, who has been mindful of this people, who are a bbranch of the tree of Israel, and has been clost from its body in a strange land; yea, I say, blessed be the name of my God, who has been mindful of us, dwanderers in a strange land.

Week 61: doctors, Emergency room, hospital

Dear Family and Friends,

This week has been absolutely Crazy!!! Quick overview: Sister Washington had gall stones, not the flu, and wasn't able to keep any food in her body for 8 days and we were in emergency on Friday when they finally found out (after doing SO many other smaller tests, 3 times into the urgent care, 2 i.v.s, the list goes on!). She stayed overnight on Friday and went into surgery on Saturday morning to remove her gall bladder and stayed another night after that. She was getting pretty bad, but now she's home and recovering! She's really happy she can eat now, but she should be taking it easy. I've been doing a lot of exchanges for lessons and so I don't go crazy inside! haha

President and Sister Beesley had planned a long time ago to come up for interviews and stay until Sunday.  Sister Washington wasn't keeping down any of the pills she was given, but her pain was bearable until Friday morning when it got really bad for some reason, and that was exactly when they flew in! They came and we made some decisions of what we needed to do and she got a blessing again.  We talked to the doctor in a ward up here, then missionary medical, who had been clued in all week, who had approved all sorts of test we had been doing at the urgent care (T.V.C. first care), so finally they gave some more tests we needed to do that the doctor had been avoiding and was scheduled way too far off. Salt lake overrode that and said to head into the hospital or emergency room, and after the doctor spoke to an emergency doctor, she was able to be admitted there, so we spent Friday in the ER.  She is a trooper, this whole week, she been positive and pretty happy, even joking around when she had energy, and almost ALL her jokes HAPPENED to be about food, probably because she couldn't eat all week! haha. They finally did an ultrasound and found gall stones, and noticed that she didn't have the regular symptoms- no inflamed gall bladder, but since she was so weak, they took out her whole gall bladder the next morning and gave her pain medication in a hospital room the night before.

With the Beesleys here for interviews and Stake Conference, they were great to have around and another support to us and the sisters. They were busy most of the trip, but every night has been late and every morning early; we finally got some sleep yesterday and last night and everything is going well!

So I got a call from (one of) the Juneau sisters this week, and she got permission so she could tell me about a recent convert in the branch who we have been trying to get a hold of since I last met him a couple of months ago. She said that he sent her a letter saying he finally opened up his scriptures after a long time and that work has been crazy but he is doing better. We tried to contact him through a few people, but we texted him to see how he was doing and he answered the next day and we just happened to be in the emergency room when he was able to get back to us. He wanted to come meet Sister Washington and see how she was doing and got to visit twice while we were at the hospital between his shifts and talked about how he wants to get to the temple someday and get back. He has such a tough schedule! We are keeping him in our prayers, but it was amazing to see that. I joked about is as a coincidence, but that was definitely a tender mercy from Heavenly Father and now we will be able to keep better contact with him.  It was very kind of him to visit! We also met a couple of less actives in the hospital who were very nice and we were able to get contact with them for their wards and connect them with the sisters! It was pretty cool, but I think the best story of this was to see how we were still able to do work while in this type of situation. There's no reason to be down when you can still lift those around you... sometime you literally have to.

The Hospital wasn't too busy when we were in, so she got her own room! The first night Sister Beesley stayed in the bed next to her and I stayed the second night (Saturday). They wanted me to try and get some good sleep on Friday because they knew I would be the one helping her after, but I slept on the other Sisters' couch- their apartment is great, but the couch is NOT for sleeping on- Sis. Washington hardly got sleep in the hospital too, before or after the surgery, so it is good that she is finally sleeping and the pain is just surgery pain, not anything else!

Sister Petersen, Sister Gerber, and me!

Stake Conference was this weekend and all the missionaries were told to go to the adult session (because we normally don't go to that session unless we have an investigator or less active with us there).  But Sister Petersen stayed in the hospital for a few hours so i could eat dinner because I was pacing in the room; I was so sick of being inside! It was great, and I went with Sister Gerber to Stake Conference for that session and then headed back to the hospital after, so the Sisters and the Beesley's could all see her at once, a little overwhelming for her, but she said it was the laugh she needed although her incisions hurt from it (she got five). We have this call in every night in the zone and one person tells a little about themselves a night and shares a story or testimony, so I got to do mine from the hospital on Saturday night.

So, Sister Washington jokes around and says that this was to teach her patience, because she says I told her to pray for patience and she did. Disclaimer, I never tell anyone to pray for patience, because I know you get the opportunity- the problem with patience is that it takes too long-- but what I actually told her is just to ask her if she ever has prayed for patience--- yeah, don't remember that. ever. haha

Today, after being home from surgery, Sister Washington needed to get out, so Sister Petersen,
Sister Gerber, and I headed to Walmart with her!

Since being in the Hospital, we weren't able to make our interviews, so President came to us when we got Sister Washington back home yesterday, before their flight to Juneau. We have exchanges set up with the other Sisters all week, so we can still do work in the YSA area and the whole branch has been so great and supportive! This whole time though, it's been good because neither Sister Washington or I have been too anxious or worried about things, we knew they would work out and that she will be able to finish her mission and that was confirmed in the blessings she received. We know the Priesthood is directed from God and that the faith of all those there was pure enough to understand it. Love you all!

Love,

Sister Wuehler

Week 60: Z.L.C., G.C., and the FLU

Dear Family and Friends,

I think this week I will just bullet point what's going on:
  • On Tuesday morning The zone leaders and I flew out to Anchorage in the middle of district meeting- Our pilot took us around Denali! It was awesome, not to mention we got an awesome view of it on the flight BACK to Fairbanks.

  • Sister Frazier and Sister Grayson picked me up and we went out and proselyted for a few hours before ZLC (Zone Leader Council) which started that night and went till about 4 the next day.
  • The sisters at ZLC did a training on COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS, which was about how we can lift those around us-- we had everyone draw faces on paper plates. It would be too much to explain over this email, but at zone meeting when we brought what we learned at ZLC to our zone here in Fairbanks, the Sisters and I changed it to attitude, why we are asked to do things and how we can improve.  It was good- there's your explanation for all those pictures of paper plates.  I think the other sisters got more photos than i did- haha.

HAPPY
AND
SAD

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!!

  • In ZLC, each of the zone leader companionships from every zone get up and give a 5 minute training about what they are focusing on in their zone. The Wasilla Elders opened theirs by teaching us "How to make tacos".  As one elder modeled this, the other grunted and groaned that he was from Arizona, he didn't need to learn any more and he was wasting his time. The other Elder pulled out the scripture from 2 Nephi 29--- a bible, a bible... we have no more need for a bible. The point they were making is that God continues to reveal his word and if we sit here murmuring we miss the point that he gives continual guidance and can help us and answer our prayers.  Part of that guidance comes through leaders.  One point that I took from that is that if we want God to be in the details of our life, we have to let him, and listen to what he's guided others to tell us. President Monson teaches that clearly in his talk from last conference "Consider the Blessings" (www.lds.org, Nov. Ensign or under Oct. General Conference)-- in all of his experiences, he never knew what his affect might be in following the spirit until AFTER.

  • President Beesley brought out a point about Jesus that is so obvious, but I think too often we don't remember or apply to ourselves-- in 3 Nephi 27:13-15, he had 2 people read it out loud and one of them only spoke each time it says "Father":

13 Behold I have given unto you my agospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do thebwill of my Father, because my Father sent me. 14 And my Father sent me that I might be alifted up upon thebcross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the ccross, that I might ddraw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be ejudged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil— 15 And for this cause have I been alifted up; therefore, according to the power of the Father I will draw all men unto me, that they may be judged according to their bworks.

The point he points out there is that Jesus Christ was exactly obedient to his Father- he knew that what he was being asked to do was what was right.
  • We started a new thing as the Fairbanks zone-- we all call in at 10:15 each night and one person gives a testimony or a story, a little about themself and then we all hang up-- I love it so far.
  • Luke 6:14-16 President told us that a missionary pointed out that in these verses, Christ calls all of his disciples in pairs
  • We started a booth at UAF this week (finally) where we go up on Campus and people can come to us- it was awesome to see the conversations we were able to have with people who came up to us--about the church, the gospel, their interactions with it-- we even met a less active who we got to talk a lot with and a woman who has friends who have gone on missions. You'd be surprised at who comes up to us- if anyone has any creative ideas for this, you should write me... hint hint.
  • So, changing the lesson at the last second, if it's really what those you are teaching need to hear totally works if you are prepared to teach it. We taught a returning member, like we do with him each week, and he had requested to learn about families, and that is what I studied for that morning, but it didn't feel quite right for him. We got there for dinner and he actually hesitated to ask if he could learn about something different. Right away, everything about the topic of the priesthood i had studied in the past clicked and we knew exactly what we needed to talk about. We watched the Mormon message, 'Sanctify Yourselves' and looked into Doctrine and Covenants 121. It was more powerful to see the way the spirit worked to let each of us know what we needed to talk about.
  • Sister Washington has been sick with the flu and hasn't kept any food or water down for 2 1/2 days. We finally called the doctor and got medicine for her from the hospital and she's starting to do better, but the weekend has been all work over the phone, getting better and General Conference- General Conference went great! Our investigator on the slope got to listen to the sessions-- it was cool to see green in Salt Lake. We watched it at the institute building on Saturday (in their comfy chairs) and then got permission on Sunday to watch it from the Hulls-- Sister Washington did well with that especially with how she was feeling.
  • We heard about another mission call of a Young single adult up here- she is going to Phoenix!

Well, love you all!

Love,

Sister Wuehler

Week 59: From NORTH of the NORTH POLE!

THERE YOU HAVE IT, We are NORTH of the North Pole!!!!!! Can you believe it?!?!?

Dear Family and Friends,

HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT EASTER!!! We spent ours here "egging", not the way you would think- cutting out paper eggs and putting scriptures and quotes about the resurrection and atonement and putting them on people's doors.  It was great and we got to go to the Branch President's house for dinner with many members of the branch who didn't have somewhere to go. It was a good day; we weren't feeling our best the whole day, but still, we enjoyed it. There is something about holidays that just makes everyone happier or at least more positive. You can just tell everyone is a little lighter than normal-- I am sure you get the point.

As I said before I never thought I would be living north of the north pole- there are actually two official poles and one of them is where we head all the time, I saw it once but I need to find out where it is again; then I will get a picture. Some missionaries have even got their tongues stuck on the North Pole- they got what was coming to them! haha

We finally went to the ice park this last p-day-- a good first p-day for Sister Washington; wrote a ton of letters; she took a nap-- I don't know why she would be tired, its not like she's a brand new missionary or anything?!? (complete sarcasm) Speaking of which, I think she is settling in just great! She woke me up the other night and sounded like she was asking a question, and I asked her what she said again because it wasn't clear. She said "nevermind!" and went back to sleep. Come to find out she was dreaming about teaching a lesson about the atonement in her sleep! Like I said, she's doing great.

who wants to switch on the northern lights???

We found Fairbanks!

We started having skype lessons with our investigator who is up on the slope.  They are going so great, and he is on date to be baptized when he gets back in early May. We got a text from him later that night after we had the lesson.  He said thank you for being able to do skype and that it really helps him to keep his mind focused in the right direction-- SO EXCITED FOR HIM!

We are also teaching another man, who is stuck working Sundays, but we are trying to help him out in every way we can and are working with a few other people. We have had a TON of training this week-- part of training, and always that extra hour of companionship study every day we have to get in. It's busy, but everything's going great! We are now done with selling tickets and volunteering at the ice park, got to help with the interior science fair and setting it up this week.

We worked in North Pole on Saturday-- first time sister WA has been out there.   We had a dinner cancel so we were able to go and knock on some less active's doors, meet some people, and then we got dinner at this place out there called Fire Wok.  I don't remember having Chinese food that fresh ever in Alaska. Everyone seemed to be opening their doors! It was so awesome, that doesn't happen too often out there.

I read in the New Testament a lot this week for Easter-- John is a funny writer! Who else would point out in their own book that they ran faster than Simon Peter. I have a feeling that Peter and John the Beloved were best buds! But really, I love the book of John.

The hymn "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go" has been on my mind this week--looking at the time it was written and what was asked of the people who it was about puts into perspective the sacrifice it takes to truly follow the Lord in All things, but it also covers that So many blessings come from God way greater than we could hope for without!

I am flying down to Anchorage tomorrow for Zone leader council! Sister Washington will stay up here with Sister Gerber and Petersen until I get back!

Have a great week!!!!

Love,

Sister Wuehler
