Week 77: the end

Institute of Religion/Young Adult Ward

Dear Family and Friends,

I'll see you on Thursday!
k love ya bye!!!

love,
Sister Wuehler

...just kidding, I will tell you about my week first!

It's been a crazy week! We haven't found out what's going to happen with Sister Hart up here yet, but we are assuming she will join in with Sister Poudrier and Clark. We are going to the Fair just after this. (emailing) My flight is to Anchorage tomorrow afternoon (alone!! without any companion) and I have a red eye Wednesday night/ Thursday morning. It is all I can do to push through all the questions about everything I will be doing when I get home. It is good that they want to know, I just am trying to be HERE as long as possible. I hate goodbyes! (gets home 9:27 Thursday morning at Oakland airport!!!)

We helped with the pig farm this week. This time to bring the momma pig and her piglets. I thought she would get the chance to bite someone or something, but they got the piglets out from around her, let her see the last piglet, then she just walked into the trailer.

We finished my last weekly planning all in one sitting- that hasn't happened in a while...

By the way, we tried southeast crab this week- (a sister) made us crab salads, we also had Alaskan halibut another night- I will miss Alaskan fish! You haven't tried fish until you've gotten it here! Or Alaskan meat- all genuine if you meet the right people. Sister Hart took me one night to dinner at Loose Moose- when is the next time we will be able to have buffalo burgers? haha... it's also pretty great because she mixes her own fry sauce everywhere she goes!

A few cool experiences this week were one with a guy who promised the Elders he would come back to church. He realized he needed to come back, and we visited him only a couple of days after he made that promise. When we shared Alma 7:11 with him, you could hear that he loved that scripture. He practically recited it as we read it. He told a story from his mission where he knew that he was sent to help this man who had cancer and was diagnosed to only live a few more months. He couldn't speak much, but he could clearly communicate- he wanted to be baptized, and he got to hear the gospel before he passed away, and was able to be baptized.

Our Chinese investigator read Alma 32, and said it was an answer to his prayer. He prayed last week when he was fishing that he could get fish, and you know what, he did, but he had to toss them back. He said he wants to start praying more often.

We were able to teach our investigator who is going to get baptized this week. We all agreed that it would be good to move it forward a little, but she is moving to Anchorage soon. She told us what baptism means to her and talked about how she can start again, but as we were talking, you could just feel the way she loves the spirit, she knows its true, and she is preparing herself, and that is how I know that she is ready. As she continues, she will come to understand more and more how important and vital the Gospel is, and as that deepens, I can't wait to see her grow. So lucky me, I get to keep in contact with the wonderful people here in Alaska. The Lord loves them! So do I!

We got to have dinner with the Hulls this week! I just love them!!! They just told story after story- it was so great, but she told us about one of her favorite books that's out of print- it's called "The Myth of Self Esteem." She was talking about how so much of what we do to build up ourselves and others is to compliment and talk about ourselves. The true thing is, the only one we need to please is the Lord, and if we give everything to the Lord, we have that confidence we need to move forward, because it is him who truly defined our worth when he gave us the blessings and sacrifice of the atonement. All he asks is that we give our shortcomings, sins, weaknesses etc that easily beset us, not just the things that are easy to give.

We met a woman this week while trying to find her daughter who invited us to talk with her. She hasn't been to church in a long while, since she's been up here, is divorced, and she is a sweetheart. We talked with her for a while and got to know her. She seems quite lonely. When we offered to share a message, she accepted and I turned to 2 Nephi 4. A thought came to mind and what I said after that weren't my own words. In the verses before 2 Nephi 4:20, Nephi is talking about how wonderful his God is, and the support he gives him, but goes on to say how wretched he is, how weak, and how easy it is to fall. But he says that God was his support in the wilderness. Right now, I am in wilderness. He has been my support, and that message was for her, but it was just as much for me as it was for her.

I feel like leaving will be like ripping off a band aid, the pain comes a little here and there, but I think I will feel it very soon. I don't need to focus on that right now though. It feels like I still have ages to go. Sister Hart is awesome!!! I am so happy to end my mission with her. It's crazy how often we say the same thing at almost exactly the same time, or just can't stop laughing, which happens a lot! We were so tired this week and one night we were passing by this place called Bun on the Run that we had gotten lunch at once, talking about how the dijon mustard is gross, but in our slurs it came out "dijon is di...gross!" man i love her. I have been blessed with companions!

I bore my testimony at church yesterday- it's hard to make it through that last Sunday. Everything comes back to how much our Savior loves us, that the Atonement is real and that it is a gift from him so we can return to him one day. The Atonement is for us all, and there is nothing greater than helping someone to have it in their life. My mission has brought me closer to my Savior, to see who he really is, what he thinks of me, and of all of us. He is my best friend. You need nothing to qualify for his love. It is always there, and that is why we should reach out to the people around it who need to understand it most. I'll take this name tag off next week, but Heavenly Father will still reach out to his children. I know that's true.

I love you all!

Love,

Sister Wuehler, for the last time

Scripture: 2 Nephi 9:41 (he employs no servant there, it is Christ)
41 O then, my beloved brethren, acome unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the bway for man is cnarrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the dgate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.

4:20
20 My God hath been my asupport; he hath led me through mine bafflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep.

"We believe in being honest, true, chased by an elephant?!?"
There was a sister we were hoping to meet that we finally met this week- some past missionaries wrote "nasa child" by her name. We finally met her and were wondering why on earth she had that there! As we drove to our next appointment it hit us that it really meant HAS a child!
