Week 38: boots and bible study

Dear Family and Friends,

This week Sister Gerber found that her boots were giving her migraines (she has special orthopedics and her only other shoes freeze her feet when we are out) and so we got permission and we have been looking for ANYTHING that would work. We must have tried 35 stores. It wasn't the style of the boot because she was trying on everything. I noticed in this how lucky I am to have the health that I do. I think we mostly take for granted that kind of thing, but I see clearly the lengths some have to go to just for survival. She knows she was sent here to Alaska for a reason so she knows that it will be worked out but Sister Morey shared a scripture relevant to the situation we were in-- Isaiah 55:8-9 "For my athoughts are not byour thoughts, neither are your cways my dways"

They'll be a way-- at the moment we just knock a couple of houses at a time so her feet don't get too cold. Even though she says she can tough it through- this is an Alaskan winter- there is a better way-- we will keep trying to figure one out.

We got some HUGE news at training this week!!! Pres and sister Beesley just got beack from the mission president's seminar in San Diego and shared that our mission, beginning in February, is getting a hundred more missionaries!! The said this from the seminar: “As Church leaders had anticipated when the change was announced, the number of individuals who have begun the missionary application process has increased significantly. Typically approximately 700 new applications are started each week. The last two weeks that number has increased to approximately 4,000 per week. Slightly more than half of the applicants are women."

All the U.S. missions will take the bulk of the missionaries and we should all be up to 250. All of us are supposed to be trainer ready by then, especially the sisters! AHH! All I can say is that I'll do it, but training is not my desire. Optimistic side: just like the saints in Nauvoo were only given a direction to go, not knowing the details or the means by which it was to be, they went. So will we.
(Note:  At the last General Conference in October, President Monson announced that Elders may begin serving a mission at age 18, and Sisters may begin serving at 19, instead of 21.)

Our seventeen year old investigator is doing so great- She brought a friend to church and is going to invite her parents to church so they can see it for themselves. She really wants to get baptized, but now she is taking in everything and is so happy. We went to young womens yesterday because we were invited in for the lesson and I am so impressed with the strength of the youth in this ward. We met a boy this week who is in the Brayton Ward boundaries but we were invited by his friend to teach him- he really loved the plan of salvation and knowing that there was purpose and direction in life. We had the Brayton Elders come to the second lesson with us and they are going back this week- he even came to church and was so happy. The Gospel is so wonderful!

Halloween was fun, I don't have a ton of time to talk about it but we enjoyed it.

We went to a bible study with an investigator this week up in North Anchorage! It was a church started in the south and Sister Gerber, having served on the bible belt was a little nervous to go, but it was very friendly, very loud and we were the only white people there. It was so fun to hear them. The pastor was a real funny guy, he said "we cannot serve God and Mammoth" without even realizing it. I notice, all in all, they were teaching many great things but I felt someting missing. I know that Heavenly Father restored that fulness to the earth with the priesthood and for the spirit to testify to our hearts of it's truth. God is the author of all good, but incomplete is not full. We enjoyed it and were grateful to share the time with her.

We are getting so much support from the ward and are so blessed here! Thank you for all your prayers- ther are felt daily!

LOVE YOU ALL!!!

Love,

Sister Wuehler

Scripture: Alma 8: 13-18
13 Now when the people had said this, and withstood all his words, and areviled him, and spit upon him, and caused that he should be bcast out of their city, he departed thence and took his journey towards the city which was called Aaron.
14 And it came to pass that while he was journeying thither, being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much atribulation and anguish of soul, because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, it came to pass while Alma was thus weighed down with sorrow, behold an bangel of the Lord appeared unto him, saying:
15 Blessed art thou, Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God from the time which thou receivedst thy first message from him. Behold, I am he that adelivered it unto you.
16 And behold, I am sent to acommand thee that thou return to the city of Ammonihah, and preach again unto the people of the city; yea, preach unto them. Yea, say unto them, except they repent the Lord God will bdestroy them.
17 For behold, they do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the astatutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people.
18 Now it came to pass that after Alma had received his message from the angel of the Lord he returned speedily to the land of Ammonihah. And he entered the city by another way, yea, by the way which is on the south of the city of Ammonihah.
